Espace Vanderborght

International Photography Exhibition

RESPACE transformed the Espace Vanderborght in Brussels into an international cultural landmark by hosting the prestigious exhibition "Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories." This six-month event attracted over 60,000 visitors, showcasing the work of one of fashion's most influential photographers.

RESPACE revitalized the Espace Vanderborght by hosting the “Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories” exhibition from December 15, 2022, to May 14, 2023

The Espace Vanderborght, a historic building owned by the City of Brussels, stands prominently in the heart of the city near the Grand Place. Designed by architects Govaerts and Van Vaerenbergh, it was completed in 1935 and originally served as a retail space for household goods. Its modernist design, characterized by large shop windows and versatile floor plans, now makes it an ideal venue for contemporary art exhibitions.

RESPACE revitalized the Espace Vanderborght by hosting the “Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories” exhibition from December 15, 2022, to May 14, 2023. This significant event was the last major use of the space before its renovation by the city and federal authorities to further enhance its role in the contemporary art scene. The exhibition, developed by the international agency Profirst in collaboration with the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, drew over 60,000 visitors, highlighting the global appeal of Lindbergh’s work.

The exhibition spanned Peter Lindbergh’s entire career, from the 1980s until his passing in 2019, and featured a wide array of his most iconic photographs. Visitors from around the world, whether fashion enthusiasts or casual observers, had the opportunity to experience Lindbergh’s unique vision and the humanity embedded in his photographic approach. The exhibition also included a pop-up store and various events, making it a vibrant cultural hub during its run.

RESPACE played a pivotal role in bringing together the City of Brussels, the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, and the design agency Profirst to realize this ambitious project. By transforming the Espace Vanderborght into a premier venue for high-profile exhibitions, RESPACE showcased the building’s potential before its planned renovation. This collaboration not only celebrated Lindbergh’s legacy but also reinforced Brussels’ cultural prestige as a multicultural capital at the crossroads of Europe.
