RESPACE transformed a historic 6,340 m² building in Brussels, now known as Stassart House, into a vibrant hub for artists’ studios and exhibitions, enriching the cultural landscape of Ixelles during its three-year activation from March 2022 to March 2025.
Stassart House, located in the heart of Brussels near Porte de Namur, is a historic building with a rich past, including serving as the headquarters for the RTBF in the 1920s. Originally constructed in 1874, this 6,340 m² space was reimagined by RESPACE into a dynamic cultural venue. Through vision and expertise, RESPACE converted this former industrial and educational site into an ideal location for artists’ studios and exhibitions, revitalizing the building and its surrounding community.
To bring this transformation to life, RESPACE partnered with Young European Artists, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting emerging European artists. This specialist partner curated the artist selection, managed the exhibitions, and supported the resident artists in their creative endeavors. The collaboration extended to local art institutions and schools, fostering a rich cultural exchange and providing opportunities for young artists to exhibit their work in a professional setting.
During its three-year activation, Stassart House hosted numerous high-profile exhibitions and events that attracted attention from the local community and beyond. The space became a platform for showcasing the work of renowned artists like Léa Belooussovitch, Jean-Paul Lespagnard, and Flavien Berger. These exhibitions, curated by Young European Artists, highlighted the venue’s versatility and its role in promoting contemporary art in Brussels. The building also featured a studio for photography and music recording, further broadening its creative scope.
RESPACE’s transformation of Stassart House significantly enriched the cultural fabric of Ixelles. By turning a vacant historic building into a vibrant cultural hub, RESPACE demonstrated the potential of temporary space activation in preserving and enhancing urban heritage. As the building transitions to its next phase, the commune of Ixelles remains grateful for the artistic and cultural value that Stassart House brought to the area during its three years as a creative incubator.
